Product Review: As I Am Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner

Product Information:
This light no suds conditioning cream gently removes residue including all of the things you’ve used to style and maintain your coils and curls. Now it’s time for a sparkling new beginning. This cowash is different from any other because it contains a special blend of natural ingredients that work to promote healthy hair growth from the follicular level.

  • Spreads easily throughout hair
  • Makes detangling a breeze
  • Gently cleanses hair and scalp

I’ve been on a natural curls journey since 2009 (after years of blow-drying that damaged my hair). I’ve used some great and not so great products. Some insanely pricey. I found that my hair liked Curl Junkie (very moisturizing) and Spiral Solutions (boutique brand) and Jessicurl (also boutique).

I am always on the hunt for “on the ground” (ie, easier to obtain) products for my Curly Care. I just tried this after seeing some good reviews. For the record, the cleansing conditioners that I’ve been using are Curl Junkie’s DAILY FIX and Jessicurl’s citrus lavender cleanser. Both work well, and DAILY FIX is the Queen of cleansing conditioners in my book. You may not even need rinse out conditioner after, it’s so moisturizing.

Okay, so this product. I likes the reviews I’d seen, but feared it would be coconut-stanky. I don’t like smelling like suntan oil. And some coconut scents are so cloying. This one is not bad. It’s tropical without being sickening.

I did use a generous amount. A full palmful for my mid-back length hair. That’s fine. I’m used to using a lot of DAILY FIX, too.

How it works: Nicely. I felt clean hair-wise and not utterly stripped like some poos can feel. (Example, Kinky Curly’s Come Clean is sulfate free, but dang if it doesn’t leave me strippy-squeaky. And some folks find the Jessicurl cleansing condish too harsh, too.)

I will say that I needed rinse out condish afterwards. This is cleansing more than conditioning. I couldn’t get a wide-toothed comb easily through my long hair.

I find it works well in conjunction with the AS I AM leave-in condish. My curls enjoyed the combo. I have dry (thyroid condition) hair that likes some protein (not too too much) and has fine and medium strands mixed. My elasticity is normal after 3+ years of good gentle care and conditioning and growing out the damaged bits. My porosity used to be high-high, and now I think it’s more normal. My curls are type 3a and 3b mixed. That’s for reference.

So, less moisturizing than DAILY FIX, will need rinse out. Wonderful price (DAILY FIX is pricey and Jessicurl’s got more expensive recently, both more expensive than this product.) And you can buy it here with PRIME (yay, will remember that) or pick it up at Sally’s Beauty (where I got mine).

Happy hair to you!
